We treat cats and dogs differently when it comes to insuring their health and paying for medical treatment according to the results of a survey released by
Saga Pet Insurance this week.
Just over a fifth (21%) of people in Britain own a cat, and a similar number (22%) have at least one dog in their household. Saga's research found that whilst 17% of cat owners say their cats are insured against ill health, nearly double the number of dog owners (32%) have taken out insurance in case their dog falls ill.
Conducted by the British Market Research Bureau (
BMRB) on behalf of Saga, the survey of 2220 adults also showed a similar pro-dog bias when respondents were asked how much they would consider paying for life saving treatment for their pet. Only a tenth (10%) of cat owners would pay more than £2000, while a fifth (21%) of dog owners would do the same.
Findings are even more pronounced in the regions. Although only 13% of cat owners in the West Midlands insure their pets, more than double (27%) insure their dogs. In the North West 12% of dog owners said they would have to consider putting their dog down if faced with a treatment bill of £1,500, a massive 41% of cat owners in the region said the same. Over three times as many dog owners (34%) as cat owners (10%) in the South East said they would be prepared to pay more than £2000 for life saving treatment for their pets.
