The organisation representing professionals working with pets, the Pet Care Trust, (
PCT) has proactively targeted every doctor's surgery in the UK with a hard hitting and well researched booklet 'Pets are good for you…' report. The 32-page report into the benefits of pet ownership on people's health has now landed on the doormats of 13500 doctors' surgeries - making a change from the usual medical journal.
The report is intended to leave readers feeling very positive about the role of pets in keeping the nation healthy.
Some of the benefits of owning a pet, detailed in the report include the lowering of blood pressure, reduction of stress and anxiety, reduced cholesterol, better and speedier recovery from illness. A pet can even reduce your headaches, indigestion and insomnia, says the report.
The report makes one thing very clear - pet owners are much more likely to be seen going into a pet shop than they would a chemist or doctors!
The PCT also wants doctors to consider the fact that families and individuals that own pets are likely to spend less time in the doctor's surgery - allowing more time for other patients.
The report discusses how pets help people of all ages from very young children, to the elderly. It cites evidence that children who own pets have stronger immune systems and take fewer days off sick from school. Studies also indicate that the long-term survival rate of pet-owning heart attack victims is significantly longer for those who do not own a pet.
