MEPs in the European Parliament on Tuesday, voted for a total ban on the testing of cosmetics on animals in the EU by the end of 2004, adopting a package of animal welfare legislation.
The new legislation will bring into force an immediate ban on the animal testing of ingredients and on any further animal testing of completed products plus an immediate ban on the sale of products within the EU which contain ingredients tested on animals where alternative methods have been verified.
Additionally, under the new rules, the cosmetics industry must find alternatives for almost all of the 14 animal testing methods that it currently uses, within five years.
If the legislation is adopted by the government, high street products right across the board will be affected - from baby lotions to deodorants. However products would not be taken off the shelves, the legislation will only be applied to new cosmetic products.
