Pet insurer, Petplan, (part of Allianz Insurance), has released some interesting early data from a survey of over 10,000 pet owners. The research forms part of the Petplan Pet Census due out in 2011, covering health, finance, social and family aspects of British pets.

It costs British local councils £22 million per year to clean up after the country's 7.5 million dogs. Collectively our dogs produce about 1,000 tonnes of faeces every day and it seems we have grown tired of picking it all up. Keep Britain Tidy says that following earlier reductions, levels of dog fouling offences have recently risen.

The Animal Medicines Training Regulatory Authority, (AMTRA), the organisation which maintains a register of people qualified to dispense animal medicines, reports that the total number of Suitably Qualified Persons (SQPs) in the UK has almost reached 4000.

I have written about the Freedom Project in the past. This is a pet fostering scheme run by the Dogs Trust with help from Cats Protection, which provides temporary care for the pets of victims of domestic violence. The project has today issued an urgent appeal for more dog foster families.

A final call to the pet industry has been made for nominations to the 2010 Pet Industry Awards. Businesses have until Thursday 01 July to get their entries in says organiser, the Pet Care Trade Association, (PCTA). The who? The newly created Pet Care Trade Association has replaced Pet Care Trust Trading Ltd as the membership body linked to the Pet Care Trust.
